Alvaston Hall Hotel

Category: Installation

December 02, 2013

Illuminate Design have recently completed a major installation at Warner Leisure’s Alvaston Hall Hotel in Cheshire. Alvaston Hall is one of the flagship hotels in Warner’s portfolio (which is part of the Bourne Leisure Group), and Illuminate Design were contracted to specify and install new audio, lighting, staging and AV systems across the hotel’s main cabaret, dining and bar areas, including a 16-screen videowall.
The technical upgrade was part of a wider £13m project to extend the hotel’s room capacity and to double in size its entertainment and bar areas for its exclusively adult guests.
For the newly extended Grove Cabaret Restaurant, where Warners provide nightly live entertainment, Illuminate Design installed a new stage, complete with motorised thrust section, and a lighting system built around Chauvet Pars, Spots and Colour Washes, controlled by a Zero 88 Solution lighting desk and Show Magic AV show control software.
Two large projection screens have been installed either side of the stage area, fed by a combination of Panasonic and Canon high-brightness, high-resolution projectors. In the bar are two 47” LG LED TV screens. All the screens are fed via an Atlona Matrix handling the switching between multiple audio/video sources, which include HDMI PC graphics and a Denon Blu Ray player.
The venue can now create spectacular light shows with precisely synchronised video and audio for its wide range of live performances. The Chauvet-based system also provides continuity with Bourne Leisure’s other venues where Warner, Haven and Butlins have all invested in Chauvet equipment.

As the audio system for the Cabaret Restaurant needed to be unobtrusive, but provide full room coverage, Illuminate Design opted for the wide dispersion characteristics provided by Martin Audio W8VDQ speakers and matching amplifiers, controlled through an Allen & Heath iDR8 system controller and GLD 80 digital mixing console. The console’s digital stage boxes allowed the audio infrastructure to be run through Cat5 cabling rather than the traditional analogue multicore.
Martin Audio speakers were also installed in the lounge and bar areas, with Bose outdoor speakers being used to relay audio to the outdoor terraces. A Yamaha mixing desk was provided as part of the bar/lounge system to enable both local control for smaller events, but also a feed into the main room’s system to enable simple delivery of background music. The Allen & Heath iDR8 system gives the venue some versatile audio management tools, allowing them to control the audio EQ and create remote ‘scene’ selection for varying inputs between the main room’s GLD 80 and the feed from the bar and lounge areas.

The servery area has been transformed by the installation of a 16-screen Samsung videowall controlled by a Datapath videowall controller, allowing Alvaston Hall to provide guests with information, promotional advertising and meal-time entertainment.
Although the hotel transferred guest dining to a temporary marquee during the rebuild, it was still vital that the technical refit was managed in as short a turnaround time as possible, and so the Illuminate Design team, led by Robin Shephard-Blandy, completed the on-site elements of the project in fewer than six weeks.
Following the successful completion of the project, the company are currently training the in-house team at Alvaston Hall and will provide ongoing technical support to the venue.
