Headington SchoolCategory: Installation
When one of the country’s leading independent schools – Headington School in Oxford – wanted to upgrade its theatre facilities, it turned to Colchester-based Illuminate Design to oversee the project.
First built in 2002, the school’s striking modern theatre is part of an extensive arts complex, providing an ideal performance space for the school’s spectacular year-round theatre productions, as well as a venue for visiting theatre companies.
Illuminate Design worked in partnership with Suffolk-based Independent Studio Services to supply custom designed Milos truss and rigging to replace the existing rigging positions, including Stagemaker chain hoist motors and remotes, along with internally wired bars and cabling. Also part of the installation was an additional 36 channels of Zero88 dimming and power distribution. All the work was carried out within the school holidays to ensure minimal disruption.
As a consequence of the new system, the school’s technical department can now carry out re-rigging at floor level, reducing both the need for working at height and the time required to rig productions. It has also enabled the school to allow students to further develop their technical backstage skills.
Illuminate Design are continuing to work with the school, providing on going technical support and safety testing, as well as providing consumable items and hiring technical equipment and effects for specific productions.
